Backing up - Why should I back up my work?

Answer:

Files can and do get lost or become corrupted!

It is therefore in your own interest to protect your work by saving backup copies.

Making backups is a fairly straightforward process - all you need to do is ensure that you always have alternatives to fall back on.

To achieve this:

  • Save regularly - at least every 10-15 minutes. The longer you leave between saves the more re-writing you will have to do if you lose your work.

  • Always save to your (Y:) drive AND then (straight after) save to another location, e.g. a removable drive or USB memory stick.

  • Don't just save over the old versions, give the files different and meaningful names as you progress, e.g. essay-12-jan-v1.doc, essay-12-jan-v2.doc etc.

Remember: a small amount of effort to back-up now could save you a lot of trouble in the future.
